Most popular home design trends in Birmingham—according to local realtors

Posted on August 14, 2023

Home design trends are always evolving—from home offices to lavish bathrooms and entertaining spaces. We talked with the experts at Ray & Poynor to get the inside scoop on what they’re seeing in Birmingham homes and what buyers are looking out for.

Outdoor spaces are becoming an extension of the home

One of the biggest things that makes a home feel luxurious is its outdoor space. Homeowners are continuing to make their outdoor areas an extension of their home, with the addition of things like fire pits, comfortable furniture, TVs, high-end pools and more.

“Outdoor living space is very important for entertaining.  When you have good outdoor space you have more square footage.”

Betsy Dreher, Realtor, Ray & Poynor

People are investing more time and resources into their outdoor areas, turning them into special places to make memories with family and friends. I don’t know about y’all, but we’re hoping this trend sticks.

Entertainment + living spaces are more important than ever

The need for space has always played a huge role in choosing a home for buyers. Now more than ever, as more and more people are working from home, space to put a home office is a huge draw for buyers.

When it comes to living spaces, here are a few features realtor Lauren Branch says are taking over the market right now:

  • Formal dining rooms

  • Built-in shelves

  • Natural light

  • Fireplaces

  • Open dining/entertaining space

“My favorite features in a home are big kitchens, eating spaces and living rooms that are open and functional for entertaining. I love hosting and having the ability for conversations to flow and everyone be able to be in the same spaces together.”

Psst—Lauren let us know that “color is back!” Bright and moody colors, wallpaper and accent walls are coming in hot as easy ways to spruce up your living space.

Color is coming back into the kitchen

Bridget Sikora gave us all the deets on what’s popular in the world of kitchens.

“Upper cabinets are going away and have been replaced by open shelving. This trend is giving homeowners an opportunity to show off their personality by creating perfectly styled vignettes. Of course, this means one has to keep these shelves decluttered and minimal looking.”

She noted that all-white kitchens will always be in style, but pops of color (think rich colored greens, blacks and blues) are making their way back into so many homes.

“Rather than ultra modern sleek kitchens, I am loving more cozy kitchens with warmer wood tones and interesting use of textures—think leathered stones rather than glossy slabs.

Adding in color through cabinets, backsplashes and mixed metals is a great way to create interest with a fresh take on the all-white kitchen.”

Bathrooms are screaming luxury

Believe it or not, bathrooms are becoming one of the most luxurious parts of a home. Hanna Nall LePere dove into the trends she’s seeing, both new and classic.

“A few newer trends we’re seeing a lot of right now are double vanities, walk-in showers, makeup vanities and shower rooms with tubs inside.

As for features that have stood the test of time, people always love a stand-alone tub and his-and-her closets.”
